Bayesian Decision Analysis I - Basics (0.5 CM) (

Date - June 11, 2008 (2:00-4:30 PM U.S. Eastern time (1400-1630) (add 5 hours for Greenwich time)

Location - WebPDC

A pdf file of the handouts will be emailed to registered participants several days prior to the WebPDC as well as the phone number for audio and instructions regarding how to log onto the WebPDC.

NOTE: The phone number for audio will not be a toll-free number. Participants will be responsible for their own long distance charges.

NOTE: The email address submitted at the time of payment will be used for all email communications and for logging onto the WebPDC.

NOTE: The registration and participation policy for each Web PDC is the same as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. Each particpant must register. Registration is per participant, not per viewing site. Only those registered should view and particpant in this WebPDC.

Instructor: Dr. Paul Hewett Ph.D. CIH

Course description:

This 2.5 hour webinar PDC consists of Part I of a two part introduction to Bayesian Decision Analysis (BDA). BDA refers to the application of Bayesian statistical methods to IH "decision making": i.e., the classification of exposures into exposure control categories, such as the AIHA exposure control categories, UK or ILO Control Banding categories, or pharmaceutical exposure control bands. (See the list of Prerequisites.)

Part I covers the following: basic methodology and calculations; assumptions, cautions and issues, and the use of the freeware program IHDataAnalyst-LiteEdition to analyze and interpret data using BDA.

The webinar will last 2.5 hours, with an additional 30 minutes for followup questions and clarifications. Each student must, within 2 weeks of the seminar, complete a 20 question test that (the test will require approximately 30 to 60 minutes). In addition, the students are encouraged to read the suggested references prior to the webinar. A certificate and 0.5 CM points will be awarded to those students that both attend the webinar and complete the 20 question test.

Learning Objectives:

(1) Understanding of Bayesian Decision Analysis (BDA) methodology.
(2) Ability to use the freeware program IHDataAnalyst-LiteEdition to calculate the Prior, Likelihood, and Posterior decision charts.
(3) Ability to quantify "professional judgment" using a Prior Decision Chart.
(4) Understanding of how BDA and the decision charts can be used to make IH decisions.
(5) Understanding of how BDA can be integrated into the AIHA or similar exposure assessment and management model.

Agenda (see list of presentations)

Fees / Sign Up

Registration - $275 per participant

The WebPDC class size is limited. Registration closes when the maximum class size is reached or 6:30PM EST (2330 GMT) on June 10.

NOTE: The registration and participation policy for this WebPDC is the same as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. That is, registration is per participant, not per viewing site. Only those registered should view and particpant in this WebPDC.

Cancellation and Makeup Policy

A credit for an upcoming WebPDC or a full refund - minus a $50 fee - will be provided for cancellations made up to five business days prior to the day of the WebPDC. For example, if the WebPDC is presented on a Thursday the cancellation must be made by 6:30PM EST the Tuesday before in order to qualify for a refund (minus a $50 fee to cover credit card fees and adminstrative costs). No refunds will be given if the notice of cancellation is not received within 5 business days of of the WebPDC.

Exposure Assessment Solutions, Inc. reserves the right to cancel a course 7 days prior to the start of the course, in which case a full refund or credit will be given to each participant.

A video of the WebPDC will be available for viewing for a limited time after the course for those unable to fully participate due to technical problems.

Prerequisites:

  • participation in the webinar PDC "IH Stats I - Basics" or a strong background in IH statistics
  • familiarity with the AIHA Exposure Assessment and Management Model (see the AIHA monograph "A Strategy for Assessing and Managing Occupational Exposures", 3rd Edition (2006)
  • a working knowledge of the IHDataAnalyst (full or Lite Edition).
  • recommended reading prior to the WebPDC:
    - Hewett, P., Logan, P., Mulhuasen, J., Ramachandran, G., and Banerjee, S.: Rating Exposure Control Using Bayesian Decision Analysis. Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health 3:568-581 (2006).
    - Chapter 21 in the AIHA monograph "A Strategy for Assessing and Managing Occupational Exposures", 3rd Edition (2006)
