2008 EASInc. Web PDC
Bayesian Decision Analysis II - Applications (0.5 CM)
Date - July 9, 2008 (2:00-4:30 PM U.S. Eastern time (1400-1630) (add
5 hours for Greenwich time)
Location - WebPDC
A pdf file of the handouts will be emailed to registered participants several
days prior to the WebPDC as well as the phone number for audio and instructions
regarding how to log onto the WebPDC.
NOTE: The phone number for audio will not be a toll-free number. Participants
will be responsible for their own long distance charges.
NOTE: The email address submitted at the time of payment will be used for
all email communications and for logging onto the WebPDC.
NOTE: The registration and participation policy for each Web PDC is the same
as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. Each particpant must register. Registration
is per participant, not per viewing site. Only those registered should
view and particpant in this WebPDC.
Instructor: Dr. Paul Hewett Ph.D. CIH
Course description:
This 2.5 hour webinar PDC consists of Part II of a two part introduction
to Bayesian Decision Analysis (BDA). BDA refers to the application of Bayesian
statistical methods to IH "decision making": i.e., the classification
of exposures into exposure control categories, such as the AIHA exposure control
categories, UK or ILO Control Banding categories, or pharmaceutical exposure
control bands. (See the list of Prerequisites.)
Part II covers the application of BDA to the following:
- rating exposures using the AIHA exposure control categories
- selection of respiratory PPE
- analysis of noise data (expressed in either "percent dose" or
"severity ratio")
- selection of noise PPE
- decision making when analyzing a censored dataset (i.e., a dataset containing
non-detects)
- rating exposures using the UK and ILO Control Banding model
- rating exposures using pharmaceutical performance-based exposure control
limits
- rating REACH exposure scenarios.
The webinar will last 2.5 hours, with an additional 30 minutes for followup
questions and clarifications. Each student must, within 2 weeks of the seminar,
complete a 20 question test that (the test will require approximately 30 to
60 minutes). In addition, the students are encouraged to read the suggested
references prior to the webinar. A certificate and 0.5 CM points will be awarded
to those students that both attend the webinar and complete the 20 question
test.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Ability to apply Bayesian Decision Analysis (BDA) methodology to the
selection of respiratory PPE.
(2) Ability to apply BDA to the analysis and interpretation of noise data
and to the selection of appropriate noise PPE.
(3) Ability to apply BDA to control banding models, such as the UK and ILO
control banding model or a pharmaceutical exposure banding model.
(4) Understanding of how BDA could be used to evaluate and rate exposure scenarios
under the EU REACH initiative.
Agenda (see list of presentations)
Fees / Sign Up
Registration - $275 per participant
The WebPDC class size is limited. Registration closes when the maximum class
size is reached or 6:30PM EST (2330 GMT) on Tuesday July 8.
NOTE: The registration and participation policy for this WebPDC is the same
as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. That is, registration is per participant,
not per viewing site. Only those registered should view and particpant in
this WebPDC.
Cancellation and Makeup Policy
A credit for an upcoming WebPDC or a full refund - minus a $50 fee - will
be provided for cancellations made up to five business days prior to the day
of the WebPDC. For example, if the WebPDC is presented on a Thursday the cancellation
must be made by 6:30PM EST the Tuesday before in order to qualify for a refund
(minus a $50 fee to cover credit card fees and adminstrative costs). No
refunds will be given if the notice of cancellation is not received within
5 business days of of the WebPDC.
Exposure Assessment Solutions, Inc. reserves the right to cancel a course
7 days prior to the start of the course, in which case a full refund or credit
will be given to each participant.
A video of the WebPDC will be available for viewing for a limited time after
the course for those unable to fully participate due to technical problems.
Prerequisites:
- Participation in the WebPDC "Bayesian Decision Analysis I - Basics"
- familiarity with the AIHA Exposure Assessment and Management Model (see
the AIHA monograph "A Strategy for Assessing and Managing Occupational
Exposures", 3rd Edition (2006)
- a working knowledge of the HDataAnalyst
(full or lite edition).
- recommended reading prior to the WebPDC:
- Hewett, P., Logan, P., Mulhuasen, J., Ramachandran, G., and Banerjee, S.:
Rating Exposure Control Using Bayesian Decision Analysis. Journal of Occupational
and Environmental Health 3:568-581 (2006).
- Chapter 21 in the AIHA monograph "A Strategy for Assessing and Managing
Occupational Exposures", 3rd Edition (2006)
