2008 EASInc. Web PDC
Censored Data Analysis I - Basics (0.5 CM)
Date - April 23, 2008 (2:00-4:30 PM U.S. Eastern time (1400-1630) (add
5 hours for Greenwich time)
Location - WebPDC
A pdf file of the handouts will be emailed to registered participants several
days prior to the WebPDC as well as the phone number for audio and instructions
regarding how to log onto the WebPDC.
NOTE: The phone number for audio will not be a toll-free number. Participants
will be responsible for their own long distance charges.
NOTE: The email address submitted at the time of payment will be used for
all email communications and for logging onto the WebPDC.
NOTE: The registration and participation policy for each Web PDC is the same
as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. Each particpant must register. Registration
is per participant, not per viewing site. Only those registered should
view and particpant in this WebPDC.
Instructor: Dr. Paul Hewett Ph.D. CIH
Course description:
This 2.5 hour webinar PDC consists of Part I of a two part introduction to
Censored Data Analysis (CDA). CDA refers to the analysis and interpretation
of datasets containing one or more occupational exposure measurements below
the field limit of detection (i.e., the Minimally Detectable Concentration).
(See the list of Prerequisites.)
Part I covers the most commonly used CDA methods used to estimate the parameters
of the exposure profile - Substitution, Log-probit Regression, and Maximum
Likelihood Estimation, and non-parametric methods - and from these the 95th
percentile or the mean exposure. The methods vary in terms of bias, precision,
and ease of calculation. Recommendations will be presented for analyzing various
types of censored datasets.
The webinar will last 2.5 hours, with an additional 30 minutes for followup
questions and clarifications. Each student must, within 2 weeks of the seminar,
complete a 20 question test that (the test will require approximately 30 to
60 minutes). In addition, the students are encouraged to read the suggested
references prior to the webinar. A certificate and 0.5 CM points will be awarded
to those students that both attend the webinar and complete the 20 question
test.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Recognition of the major issues and problems associated with the statistical
analysis of censored datasets (i.e., datasets that contain one or more measurements
that is less than the field LOD or the Minimum Detectable Concentration)
(2) Familiarity with the four families of Censored Data Analysis (CDA) methods
and most commonly used method within each family.
(3) Practice analyzing and interpreting censored datasets using freeware software
(IHDataAnalyst-LiteEdition)
(4) Awareness of the overall accuracy of the various methods as a function
of (a) simple versus complex censored datasets and (b) varying degrees of
censoring (i.e., low, medium, high, and severe censoring).
(5) Recognition of the consequences of failing to properly analyze a censored
dataset.
Agenda (see list of presentations)
Fees / Sign Up
Registration - $275 per participant
The WebPDC class size is limited. Registration closes when the maximum class
size is reached or 6:30PM EST (2330 GMT) on Tuesday April 22.
NOTE: The registration and participation policy for this WebPDC is the same
as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. That is, registration is per participant,
not per viewing site. Only those registered should view and particpant in
this WebPDC.
Cancellation and Makeup Policy
A credit for an upcoming WebPDC or a full refund - minus a $50 fee - will
be provided for cancellations made up to five business days prior to the day
of the WebPDC. For example, if the WebPDC is presented on a Thursday the cancellation
must be made by 6:30PM EST the Tuesday before in order to qualify for a refund
(minus a $50 fee to cover credit card fees and adminstrative costs). No
refunds will be given if the notice of cancellation is not received within
5 business days of of the WebPDC.
Exposure Assessment Solutions, Inc. reserves the right to cancel a course
7 days prior to the start of the course, in which case a full refund or credit
will be given to each participant.
A video of the WebPDC will be available for viewing for a limited time after
the course for those unable to fully participate due to technical problems.
Prerequisites:
- participation in the webinar PDC "IH Stats I - Basics" or a strong
background in IH statistics
- familiarity with the AIHA Exposure Assessment and Management Model (see
the AIHA monograph "A Strategy for Assessing and Managing Occupational
Exposures", 3rd Edition (2006)
- a working knowledge of the IHDataAnalyst
(full or Lite Edition).
- recommended reading prior to the WebPDC:
- Hewett, P. and Ganser, G.H. (2007): A Comparison of Several Methods for
Analyzing Censored Data. Annals of Occupational Hygiene 51:611-632.
