IH Statistics II - Advanced Methods (0.5 CM)

Date - May 7, 2008 (2:00-4:30 PM U.S. Eastern time (1400-1630) (add 5 hours for Greenwich time)

Location - WebPDC

A pdf file of the handouts will be emailed to registered participants several days prior to the WebPDC as well as the phone number for audio and instructions regarding how to log onto the WebPDC.

NOTE: The phone number for audio will not be a toll-free number. Participants will be responsible for their own long distance charges.

NOTE: The email address submitted at the time of payment will be used for all email communications and for logging onto the WebPDC.

NOTE: The registration and participation policy for each Web PDC is the same as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. Each particpant must register. Registration is per participant, not per viewing site. Only those registered should view and particpant in this WebPDC.

Instructor: Dr. Paul Hewett Ph.D. CIH

Course description:

This 2.5 hour webinar PDC consists of Part II of a two part introduction to Industrial Hygiene Statistics (IH Statistics). IH Statistics refers to those statistical methods and concepts that have proved useful for characterizing occupational exposure data and for IH decision making. (See the list of Prerequisites.)

Part II primarily covers comparison tests (parametric and non-parametric), trends analysis, control charts, and analysis-of-variance. Included also is a brief introduction to Censored Data Analysis, and Bayesian Decision Analysis.

The webinar will last 2.5 hours, with an additional 30 minutes for followup questions and clarifications. Each student must, within 2 weeks of the seminar, complete a 20 question test that (the test will require approximately 30 to 60 minutes). In addition, the students will be highly encouraged to read the suggested references prior to the webinar. A certificate and 0.5 CM points will be awarded to those students that both attend and/or view the webinar and complete the 20 question test.

Learning Objectives:

(1) Ability to compare two exposure datasets - e.g., exposures before and after intervention to determine if the new exposure profile is significantly reduced - using both parametric and non-parametric methods.
(2) Ability to detect, analyze, and interpret trends in exposure data.
(3) Ability to use analysis-of-variance methods to calculate and interpret within- and between-worker variability, as well as estimate the fraction of workers having individual 95th percentiles exceeding the TWA OEL or the fraction of workers having individual mean exposures exceeding a long-term average OEL.
(4) Recognition of the components of a report detailing the statistical analysis and interpretation of an exposure dataset, relative to a TWA OEL or STEL.

Agenda (see list of presentations)

Fees / Sign Up

Registration - $275 per participant

The WebPDC class size is limited. Registration closes when the maximum class size is reached or 6:30PM EST (2330 GMT) on Tuesday May 6.

NOTE: The registration and participation policy for this WebPDC is the same as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. That is, registration is per participant, not per viewing site. Only those registered should view and particpant in this WebPDC.

Cancellation and Makeup Policy

A credit for an upcoming WebPDC or a full refund - minus a $50 fee - will be provided for cancellations made up to five business days prior to the day of the WebPDC. For example, if the WebPDC is presented on a Thursday the cancellation must be made by 6:30PM EST the Tuesday before in order to qualify for a refund (minus a $50 fee to cover credit card fees and adminstrative costs). No refunds will be given if the notice of cancellation is not received within 5 business days of of the WebPDC.

A video of the WebPDC will be available for viewing for a limited time after the course for those unable to fully participate due to technical problems.

Prerequisites:

  • participation in the webinar PDC "IH Stats I - Basics" or a strong background in IH statistics
  • familiarity with the AIHA Exposure Assessment and Management Model (see the AIHA monograph "A Strategy for Assessing and Managing Occupational Exposures", 3rd Edition (2006)
  • a working knowledge of the IHDataAnalyst (full or Lite Edition).
  • recommended reading prior to the WebPDC:
