Introduction to the Design of Performance-based Exposure Assessment Strategies (0.5 CM)
Date - June 25, 2008 (2:00-4:30 PM U.S. Eastern time (1400-1630) (add
5 hours for Greenwich time)
Location - WebPDC

is per participant, not per viewing site. Only those registered should
view and particpant in this WebPDC.
Instructor: Dr. Paul Hewett Ph.D. CIH
Course description:
This 2.5 hour webinar PDC covers an introduction to the design of performance-based
exposure assessment strategies, as well as an introduction to sample size
estimation. The focus will be on designing strategies that will reliably determine
if an exposure profile for a Similar Exposure Group is acceptable or unacceptable,
relative to a full-shift, TWA occupational exposure limit. (See
the list of Prerequisites.)
The webinar will last 2.5 hours, with an additional 30 minutes for followup
questions and clarifications. Each student must, within 2 weeks of the seminar,
complete a 20 question test that (the test will require approximately 30 to
60 minutes). In addition, the students are encouraged to read the suggested
references prior to the webinar. A certificate and 0.5 CM points will be awarded
to those students that both attend the webinar and complete the 20 question
test.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Principles of hypothesis testing
(2) Rules-of-thumb for estimating sample sizes
(3) Parametric and non-parametric calculation methods for estimating a reasonable
sample size
(4) Principles and steps for designing a performance-based strategy
(5) Experience using freeware software for generating performance-curves
(6) Experience designing a baseline, commissioning, or termination/reduction
exposure sampling strategy
(7) Experience designing a corporate surveillance strategy (for the AIHA exposure
control model)
Agenda (see list of presentations)

Registration - $275 per participant
The WebPDC class size is limited. Registration closes when the maximum class
size is reached or 6:30PM EST (2330 GMT) on Tuesday June 24.
NOTE: The registration and participation policy for this WebPDC is the same
as for a fixed location or on-site PDC. That is, registration is per participant,

this WebPDC.
Cancellation and Makeup Policy
A credit for an upcoming WebPDC or a full refund - minus a $50 fee - will
be provided for cancellations made up to five business days prior to the day
of the WebPDC. For example, if the WebPDC is presented on a Thursday the cancellation

(minus a $50 fee to cover credit card fees and adminstrative costs). No
refunds will be given if the notice of cancellation is not received within
5 business days of of the WebPDC.
Exposure Assessment Solutions, Inc. reserves the right to cancel a course
7 days prior to the start of the course, in which case a full refund or credit
will be given to each participant.
A video of the WebPDC will be available for viewing for a limited time after
the course for those unable to fully participate due to technical problems.
Prerequisites:
- participation in the webinar PDC "IH Stats I - Basics" or a strong
background in IH statistics
- familiarity with the AIHA Exposure Assessment and Management Model and IH
statistics (see AIHA monograph "A Strategy for Assessing and Managing
Occupational Exposures", 3rd Edition (2006)
- Each student should download and install the freeware program "Exposure
Assessment Strategy Simulator" (available from www.oesh.com)
- recommended reading prior to the WebPDC:
Hewett, P. (2005): Technical Report 0503 - Performance-based exposure
assessment strategies for TWA exposure limits. Exposure Assessment Solutions,
Inc. (available free from
www.oesh.com).
